The principal Pancharama shrine, one of five temples said to enshrine fragments of a single cosmic Shiva lingam split by Vishnu's discus to end the tyranny of the demon Tarakasura. Amaravati, where it stands, was also the capital of the ancient Satavahana dynasty and a major early Buddhist centre — the temple sits beside the ruins of the Amaravati Stupa.
