The Attukal Pongala (February–March) is the world's largest gathering of women for a religious event — over 2.5 million women converge on the streets of Thiruvananthapuram to cook pongal as an offering. The Guinness World Record was first set in 1997 and broken every year since.

History

The Attukal Bhagavathy is believed to be the manifestation of Kannagi from the Tamil epic Silappadhikaram, who is said to have passed through this location. The temple's origins go back several centuries, with the current structure built in the traditional Kerala style.
