One of the most sacred Rama temples in India, perched on the banks of the Godavari river. Lord Seetharamachandra is enshrined here in his state of divine marriage — Rama with Sita and Lakshmana. The Telangana government conducts a grand state wedding ceremony (Seetharama Kalyanam) on Rama Navami, broadcast live across the state.

Bhadrachalam is the foremost Rama kshetra in the Deccan. The saint-poet Bhakta Ramadasu (Kancherla Gopanna) spent years in prison here for using royal treasury funds to rebuild this temple — his devotion and the miracles that followed are legendary in Telugu culture.

History

The original temple was built in the 17th century by Bhakta Ramadasu (Kancherla Gopanna), the revenue officer of the Qutbshahi kingdom. He used state funds to rebuild the dilapidated temple and was imprisoned for 12 years by the Nawab. Lord Rama and Lakshmana are said to have appeared before the Nawab in a dream and repaid the debt — an event still celebrated as a miracle.

A hilltop shrine on Indrakeeladri hill overlooking the Krishna River in Vijayawada, dedicated to Goddess Durga in her Kanakadurga form. Legend holds that the sage Indrakeeladri performed penance here for the goddess to reside on the hill, and its annual Dasara festivities draw enormous crowds.
