One of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, where the upper teeth of Goddess Sati are said to have fallen. Goddess Jogulamba (an extremely fierce form of Devi) is worshipped here — her form is unique and terrifying, with a garland of corpses and her own child in her mouth. The temple is on the Tungabhadra river adjacent to the Navabrahma temples.

Jogulamba is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas and among the rarest Devi forms — the idol was lost for centuries and rediscovered after excavation. The Goddess is worshipped in her most fearsome aspect. Receiving darshan of Jogulamba is said to confer liberation.

History

The original Jogulamba temple was submerged when the Srisailam Dam reservoir filled. The idol was rescued and reinstalled in a new temple. The site at Alampur combines the sacred energy of a Shakti Peetha and the Navabrahma group of Chalukya temples — making it one of the most powerful pilgrimage sites in South India.
