Famous for the unique Bharani festival — where devotees sing crude folk songs (Bharanippatu) to provoke the Goddess's anger and power. Considered one of the original 18 Shakti shrines of Kerala.

The Bharani festival at Kodungallur is unlike any other temple ritual in Hinduism — devotees shout provocative songs to invoke the Goddess's fierce energy. The ritual, though controversial, represents one of India's oldest tantric traditions. The city was also the first place where Christianity arrived in India (St. Thomas in 52 CE).

History

Kodungallur (Muchiri/Muzuris) was the principal port of ancient Kerala — trading with Greeks, Romans, Arabs, and Chinese. The Bhagavathy temple is believed to be the original Shakti shrine from which Kerala's 18 Bhagavathy temples derive their power.
