History & Significance

History

Built by the Pallava kings in the 8th century CE, this is Chennai's oldest surviving temple. The Cholas, Vijayanagara kings, and later Nawabs of Arcot all contributed to the temple. It enshrines five forms of Vishnu — an extremely rare configuration.
