Significance
Sri Manjunatheshwara Temple at Dharmasthala is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Karnataka, uniquely managed by a Vaishnava family (the Heggade dynasty) even though it is a Shaivite temple. The temple is renowned for its annadana — free meals served to over 10,000–20,000 pilgrims daily — and for its extraordinary tradition of secular service that transcends caste and religion. Dharmasthala is a model of how a religious institution can serve humanity.
History
Dharmasthala has been managed by the Heggade dynasty — a Jain-Vaishnava community — for over 800 years. According to tradition, divine beings (dharmadevatas) appeared to the Heggade ancestor and instructed him to establish a dharmic kshetra (place of righteousness) and bring the deity of Manjunatha from Kadri Manjunatha Temple in Mangalore. The current administrator, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, has transformed the institution into a model of rural development, healthcare, and education.
The dharmadevatas (divine spirits) of the Pergade family (predecessors of the Heggades) appeared in a dream and commanded the family head to establish a dharmakshetra at Dharmasthala and serve all pilgrims. The deity Lord Manjunatha was brought from Mangalore and installed. The dharmadevatas — Kalarahu, Kalarakahi, Kumarashakti, and Kanyakumari — continue to be worshipped alongside the main deity.
Architecture
The main temple is built in the Kerala-Tulu architectural style with a copper-plated sloping roof. The entrance has a massive golden flagpost (dwajasthambha). The sanctum is relatively small and serene. The temple complex also includes the Bahubali statue (39 feet), car museum, museum of vintage artefacts, and the world's largest Tula-bhara (balance weighing ritual) facility.
