History & Significance
Significance
Tirumala Venkateswara Temple is the world's most-visited religious site, receiving 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily. Situated on the seventh peak of the Tirumala Hills at 853 metres, the temple enshrines Lord Venkateswara — a form of Vishnu believed to have appeared here to save mankind from the trials of Kali Yuga. The temple is managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and is the wealthiest Hindu religious institution in the world, receiving donations in excess of ₹650 crore annually.
History
The temple's origins date back over 2,000 years. The earliest historical records trace to the Pallava period (9th century CE). Successive dynasties — the Cholas, Vijayanagara kings, and Vijayanagara's feudatories — all made extensive contributions. The gold-plated vimana (tower) over the sanctum was added during the Vijayanagara era. The Ananda Nilayam (sanctum sanctorum) houses the four-metre-tall idol of Venkateswara, flanked by Sridevi and Bhudevi. Since 1933, the temple has been administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, a statutory board under the Andhra Pradesh government.
Lord Vishnu descended to Earth as Venkateswara to repay a debt to Kubera, the god of wealth, and chose the seven hills of Tirumala as his abode until the end of Kali Yuga. The presiding deity is worshipped as 'Kaliyuga Pratyaksha Daivam' — the god who personally blesses devotees in the current age. Pilgrims traditionally tonsure their heads as an offering of ego and gratitude. The hair donations alone generate hundreds of crore rupees annually through the TTD hair auction.
Architecture
Built in Dravidian style, the main vimana (Ananda Nilayam) is fully plated with gold and rises above the sanctum. The rajagopuram (main entrance tower) is a seven-tiered structure. The temple complex includes the sacred Swami Pushkarini tank, the Ranganayakula Mandapam, and numerous prakara walls. Stone inscriptions on the temple walls document donations from multiple dynasties spanning ten centuries. The outer walls are adorned with intricate carvings of celestial beings, animals, and mythological scenes.
