History

The Vaikom Satyagraha (1924–1925) was a landmark non-violent campaign for social justice — demanding the right of lower-caste Hindus to walk on public roads near the temple, which had been denied for centuries. Gandhi visited Vaikom in 1925 to support the movement. The struggle succeeded and became a model for later civil rights movements.
