One of the three principal temples of Kanchipuram alongside Ekambareswarar and Varadaraja Perumal, dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi ('she of the loving eyes') and regarded as one of the Shakti Peethas. The philosopher Adi Shankaracharya is traditionally credited with establishing the Sri Chakra here and moderating the goddess's fierce form into a benevolent one.
